Work-in-Progress Wednesday

Inspired by a fellow ravelry knitter’s wonderful project page (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/bunnyknitter/classic-mittens), I decided to do my own variation on Purl Bee’s Classic Mitten pattern. It’s my first time knitting mittens, so I was a little nervous!

I used Patons worsted wool in a beautiful off-white. Bunnyknitter used a lovely variegated yarn for the accent, but I decided to achieve a similar effect using a different strand of yarn on each third row. The result was very satisfying, although I wouldn’t highly recommend it because it resulted in a lot of ends to weave in!

I’ve finished one mitten. It took several tries to get the thumb right. Hopefully my notes will be helpful when I knit the second one.

Underneath the mitten in progress in the picture is the body of my very first sweater! But more about that on FO Friday!

Ten on Tuesday

Today’s Ten on Tuesday is extra fitting: Ten things you love to do on an extra day off. It was a rainy day today in my neck of the woods, perfect for staying in and doing all those little tasks I don’t usually get to!

1) Knit socks. There’s nothing quite like sock knitting. Knowing something I can make with my two hands is shortly going to be keeping my toes toasty (or in this case, my boyfriend) feels awesome!

2) Watch BBC dramas. Comedies too, but there’s nothing like Downton Abbey or Doctor Who to inspire some serious knitting!

3) Play with my dog. I have a Yorkie who’s a rescue, so I try to take time to give him extra love. Whether it’s playing fetch until we’re both worn out or taking nice long walks, it’s nice to get some quality time together.

4) Chores. As much as I hate to admit it, I’m usually behind on either dishes, laundry, taking out the trash, or all three at once. Do it all first thing in the morning, then get the rest of the day to play!

5) Read. I always have a few books that I’m reading at once (start-it is doesn’t only apply to knitting!) Right now I’m getting very close to the end of Ender’s Game. Well probably finish it tomorrow so I can go see the movie on Friday. I’m also reading Les Miserables and Anna Karenina.

6) Write. I have a number of writing ideas bouncing around my head, but I rarely get the time to sit down and fresh them out. Also, my blog has been woefully neglected lately, so it’s nice to get to spend some time on it. Speaking of which…

7) Catch up on the blogs I follow, knitting blogs and webcomics. And get ideas for new projects, what else! I’ll also include updating my ravelry project page, as well. I am terrible about keeping up with that thing!

8) Learn a new song on my ukulele. Today it was All I Want by Joni Mitchell.

9) Call family. My family are a little far-flung, so it’s important to stay in contact. And Facebook is no substitute for phone calls!

10) Cook something. Now that the kitchen is clean, let’s make a mess! A day off is the perfect time to try a new recipe. Sometimes it’s a planned experiment, like the batch of apple butter I made last weekend. Other times it’s spontaneous let’s-see-what-I-can-make-from-random-ingredients. It’s not always a success, but it’s usually pretty entertaining!!

Movie Monday Halloween

Halloween’s on Thursday, so it’s horror movie Monday!

I started with John Dies at the End. I’d heard a lot of good things about it, but hadn’t gotten around to seeing it. It’s one of those movies that defies description. Not that I think it was great. You don’t even have to think it was good, or even like it. It’s just different, unique from almost any other movie out there. Which, funny enough, puts it in another category: unique movies, like Fight Club, Donnie Darko. It looks at the world on a different way.

Next up was Jug Face. Liked the title, something weird about it, and definitely off. That describes the movie pretty well. Proves that the scariest thing in the world is people.

A few classics like The Evil Dead II (I had originally intended only to watch movies I’d never seen before, but I had to have one exception, and I love Bruce Campbell!) and Interview with the Vampire.

While I watched, I finished a sweater! It happened pretty late, so pics will have to follow tomorrow.

Anyone have any recommendations for good horror movies?
